چکیده

The concepts of connectivity, localization, and frustration are explored in relation to glass formation in amorphous materials. First, the concept of eigenclusters to geometrically characterize correlations in amorphous materials is introduced, and discussed in detail for both the Ising ferromagnet and Ising spin glass models. Second, a new, glass-forming percolation model that contains frustration as the essential ingredient, and exhibits fwo percolation transitions, is discussed. This new model gives new insights into frustrated systems, and applications to the king spin glass model and other glass-forming systems are discussed. In particular, we propose the possibility that the occurrence of a percolation-type transition at temperatures above the glass transition temperature may be a general feature of glass-forming systems. The important role of computer simulations in probing the mechanism of glass formation is emphasized.

Frustration with Fat Graphs

We consider the effect of geometric frustration induced by the random distribution of loop lengths in the “fat” graphs of the dynamical triangulations model on coupled antiferromagnets. While the influence of such connectivity disorder is rather mild for ferromagnets in that an ordered phase persists and only the properties of the phase transition are substantially changed in some cases, any fi...

Long Range Frustration in Finite-Connectivity Spin Glasses: Application to the random K-satisfiability problem

A long range frustration index R is introduced to the finite connectivity Viana–Bray ±J spin glass model as a new order parameter. This order parameter is then applied to the random K-satisfiability (K-SAT) problem to understand its satisfiability transition and to evaluate its global minimum energy. Associated with a jump in R from zero to a finite value, SAT-UNSAT transition in random 3-SAT o...

Long range frustration in finite connectivity spin glasses: A mean field theory and its application to the random $K$-satisfiability problem

A mean field theory of long range frustration is constructed for spin glass systems with quenched randomness of vertex–vertex connections and of spin–spin coupling strengths. This theory is applied to a spin glass model of the random K-satisfiability problem (K = 2 or K = 3). The satisfiability transition in a random 2-SAT formula occurs when the clauses-to-variables ratio α approaches αc(2) = ...

Observation of the disorder-induced crystal-to-glass transition.

The role of frustration and quenched disorder in driving the transformation of a crystal into a glass is investigated in quasi-two-dimensional binary colloidal suspensions. Frustration is induced by added smaller particles. The crystal-glass transition is measured to differ from the liquid-glass transition in quantitative and qualitative ways. The crystal-glass transition bears structural signa...

The frustration-based approach of supercooled liquids and the glass transition: a review and critical assessment

One of the most spectacular phenomena in physics in terms of dynamical range is the glass transition and the associated slowing down of flow and relaxation with decreasing temperature. That it occurs in many different liquids seems to call for a ”universal” theory. In this article, we review one such theoretical approach which is based on the concept of ”frustration”. Frustration in this contex...
